Stone Setting – Setting Square Cabochon Part One

Click to Watch

Part One

Oval and round cabochons are fairly straight forward to set, but what about square or stones with straight sides? Bezel setting a stone with corners is somewhat more difficult because if it isn’t done properly the excess metal puckers at the corners.

The techniques involved with making a bezel is technical depending on the stone. Does it have sharp crisp corners or are they slightly rounded? Andrew realises that his original idea to make the bezel is not needed as a quick and simple technique seems to work better with this type of stone. The setting is then made up into a simple style ring.

Part Six

When the general public purchase mass produced items of jewellery, the last thing they think about is the quality of the manufacturing.

When a client of Andrew’s came in to the shop one day with a stunning pear shaped Blue Topaz stone pendant, she wanted to know if the mount could be repaired. One look at it and Andrew immediately saw that the gold was so brittle and there where several cracks all over the gold mount.

This brittleness was due to poor casting. Something that Andrew’s client had not even noticed at the time of purchase. The only thing that Andrew could do was to scrap the original gold mount and handcraft a brand new setting for the stone.

Part Two

The use of cast and prefinished shanks and settings can be a way to turn work round quickly. You order in the components and the correct sized diamonds and within half an hour you have a finished piece of jewellery

With Valentines day in a couple of days, a client of Andrew’s wanted a pair of drop ear rings set with diamonds. There were none suitable in the shop so a quick call to the casting company ensured a pair of prefinished ear rings would be delivered the next day. Twenty four hours later the client entered Andrew’s shop where the pair of ear rings were ready for collection. Another happy client.

Techniques – Setting Old Cut Diamonds Part 3

Diamond Pendant
Last Part

One quiet Saturday afternoon an old lady came into the shop with a request that touched my heart. Her grand daughter’s birthday was coming up and as a gift the old lady had decided to give her the engagement ring that had been on the lady’s finger for over 50 years. Needles to say, the ring had worn considerably. In fact, there was no way to repair it. The only way we could restore it was to supply a new shank and setting and use the original diamonds.

As the grand daughter was a very sporty person, Andrew suggested that a plain bezel setting would be far more practical than a claw setting. The old lady was delighted that her original engagement ring diamonds were going to be given a new lease of life and able to be worn every day.
