Nearly every one states the same way but there is so much that can go wrong if you cut the ends incorrectly and you will end up with a ring that is too small and certainly not the right size you intended. If you follow Andrew’s method, you will end up with the right ring size every time.

Never use a file without a handle. Also when fitting a handle to the file, make sure you fit it correctly as a loose fitting file handle may result in the tang at the end of the file being driven into the hand accidentally.
