How to Fit Gravers into Their Handles

Fitting Gravers
The graver is a piece of hardened steel in various cross sections that have to be fitted into wooden handle. Gravers come in several shapes; wedge, diamond, rounded, and grooved. Also the handles come in various shapes too; ball, mushroom, some have flats on the too.

Some craftsmen use epoxy to cement their gravers into the handles but Andrew shows you the ‘original’ way. The handles for the gravers have a small starter hole that needs to be enlarged to accept the tang of the graver. This will allow the graver to jamb in the handle without slipping out. Then the fun begins but make sure you have adequate ventilation.

Video Request – Obtaining a Mirror Finish on Silver Part 1

Polishing Silver This is the second film of a Video Request on How to Obtain a Mirror Finish on Silver

An At The Bench member contacted the team to request a film on a subject that he needed help on. Andrew has responded and filmed this two part film.

Many jewellers consider polishing a boring task but it is an important procedure that will effect the final appearance of the piece and will, ultimately, determine whether the piece is acceptable to the wearer. Although good polishing cannot cover up poor craftsmanship, a poor polish will make even the most expert craftsmanship look sloppy.

Video Request – Making Head Pins

Making Had Pins Video Requested By Ray

In response to Ray’s request, Andrew Berry has filmed a couple of techniques on how to make head pins. Head pins are used very often in jewellery making especially when to comes to hanging and threading beads on wires used in making ear rings.

The holes in the beads are not often the same size and this leads to problems with readily available shop bought head pins.

Polishing Hard to Reach Areas   We have filmed this video in response to an At The Bench member’s request via the Suggest a Video Topic button on the bottom left of the page.

When designing and constructing a piece of jewellery it is important to always think ahead to the next stage of construction. If what you are doing next will effect the way you polish the item then stop and do something about it now. Also, having the correct tools and equipment to hand to help you polish those hard to reach areas will also help speed up your work and make your life easier.
